ARTIST STATEMENT
MAOUI is a contemporary artist based in Brussels.
Her work explores language, emotion, and social dynamics through bold, text-driven compositions.
Blending abstraction, pop art, and street influences, she transforms words into visual statements playful, provocative, and sometimes unsettling.
Her practice questions perception, identity, and the weight of what is left unsaid. Each piece invites the viewer to pause, reflect, and reconnect.
BIOGRAPHY
My name is Maïté, though my closest friends call me Maoui.
Passionate about the arts from an early age, I began dancing at the age of five and continued for nearly sixteen years. Through this practice, I discovered discipline, collective work, and the freedom of movement.
Alongside dance, I explored other forms of expression: speech, declamation, theatre, and drawing. Improvisational theatre became a central part of my journey for eight years, nurturing my sense of spontaneity, creativity, and shared emotion.
Later, I pursued a career in event production, first in the film industry and then in the private sector. Communication whether verbal or artistic has always been an essential part of who I am.
Today, creating has become a necessity, almost an urgency: a way to release what I long held back, through lack of confidence or maturity. My work is often abstract, playful, sometimes a little irreverent, yet always guided by a common thread: words, their meanings, their hidden layers, their weight.
I enjoy experimenting, combining materials and textures, provoking thought, questioning, expressing injustice and emotion and above all, telling stories.
I paint the way one speaks too loudly: to let it out.
Between humor, anger, and poetry, my works express the words we do not always say.
